Dog breeds for first-time owners
Your first dog doesn't have to be the easiest in the world, but it should forgive rookie mistakes. These 12 breeds combine trainability, adaptability and openness with strangers.
How this list was built
The rule, out in the open
- Trainability ≥ 4/5
- Adaptability ≥ 4/5
- Mental stimulation it needs ≤ 4/5
12 of 30 directory breeds qualify · 18 don't · 0 have no data for a field in the rule (left out, named below)
The numbers come from the Lord Chucho deck: the scale published by the AKC and the books in our library, with a citation on every bar. Where there's no data, there's no breed: we'd rather leave the gap than make it up.
No breed replaces an obedience class or the willingness to read about dogs. And a mutt from the shelter can be the best first dog: what matters is the individual.
